New Campaign Urges Britons To Have A "Light Bulb Moment"

As the government announces it has missed its climate change targets perhaps it is time for individuals to take a stand...

If you are concerned about global warming but not sure what you can do to make a difference Come Off It Day could be just the thing you have been looking for.

On April 4 the UK population will be urged to come off its addiction to unnecessary energy use by switching off devices such as TV sets that are usually left on stand-by and by installing at least one energy saving bulb. The theory is that if everyone were to do this there would be a noticeable dip in energy consumption on that day - a small step towards to trying to reduce the UK's demand for energy and a large step towards making a meaningful statement about the public's concern about power stations' use of fossil fuels.

Carbon emissions campaigner Dave Hampton, the man behind the Come Off It Day campaign (and compiler of MSN UK's 75 great green websites section), says: "If every house saves just a few watts of power, that's one less new power station that we need to build. And if every house were to savs 100W through simple actions like switching off a light that's not really needed, or being careful not to overfill the kettle, we?d save not one power station but several.

"These actions will help to show that we do not need ? or want ? more dirty power stations. It's a first step towards that 'light bulb' moment where everyone realises that the less dependent we are on power, the more powerful we become."

Hampton has already got the backing of a range of useful allies for his campaign including Colin Challen MP, chairman of All Party Parliamentary Climate Change Group.
